Insprit Introduces Next-Generation Open WiBro Platform
January 2, 2009
Insprit said that it began to provide KT WiBro with a next-generation open service platform. The platform is Korea’s first open service solution that encourages user participation. Users can freely edit or produce service applications on the Web, push them to a variety of devices real time by using DCD technology, download them and share them with other users.
The platform is incorporated into the W-Station service, Korea’s first personalized wire/wireless open mobile 2.0 service, and provided under the name of “Open Box.” It enables WiBro users to freely produce services they want and share them. Also, even users who are not registered with the WiBro service can produce service applications for WiBro devices through SDK and post them onto the “Open Box gallery” so that any WiBro users could download them.

Informa predicts Mobile TV services to generate revenues over $100 billion in 2013
November 28, 2008
Revenues from Mobile TV services will generate USD1.5 billion in 2008, rising to over USD100 billion in 2012, according to research by Informa Telecoms & Media. At present the revenues are said to be predominantly from subscription fees but this is expected to change over time as the advertising business model starts to gain prominence. Informa believes that by 2013 nearly half of the revenues will come from advertising.
According to Informa, in the next two years, growth is anticipated to be strongest in the pioneering markets of South Korea and Japan before the rest of the world starts to catch up around 2010/2011. Despite isolated success stories in places like Italy and Austria, Europe is not expected to see rapid growth in Mobile TV until 2009. The USA is expected to take even longer as confusion over standards prevents growth. Eventually, concerted momentum behind ATSC-MH is expected to boost the market for mobile TV in North America.

Market Forces to Drive Embedded Cellular Modem Sales Over 83 Million Units in 2013
October 22, 2008
Although embedded cellular modem sales have been slow to take off, momentum is building for increased sales, according to a recent study from ABI Research. One recent development is the GSMA’s Mobile Broadband Service Mark initiative which, backed by media spending of $1 billion, will create awareness of laptops with embedded connectivity.
Other drivers include: Qualcomm’s Gobi chipset that enables modem connectivity on both GSM and CDMA networks; lower mobile broadband pricing; and networks maintaining their current EV-DO Rev A and HSPA air interfaces for at least two more years. ABI Research forecasts that these and other market forces will increase embedded cellular modem sales to nearly $9 billion in 2013.

Falling WiMAX Chipset Prices Spell Good News for Adoption of Smaller Mobile Devices
July 16, 2008
The WiMAX chipset market is advancing quickly. There are solid 2-chip designs consisting of a single-chip baseband IC and a single-chip RF IC that are bringing power consumption down. Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, and Sequans have single-chip designs that include both the baseband and RF. Most importantly, WiMAX chipset ASPs are dropping rapidly.
“Even as the mobile WiMAX chipset market has barely gotten its feet wet, chipset ASPs are declining rapidly due to heavy competition and greater integration in designs,” says ABI Research principal analyst Philip Solis. “Prices for the baseband and RF components of the chipset have come down from the $35 range a few years ago to below $25, and will drop below $10 in 2011. These falling WiMAX chipset prices are critical for inclusion of the technology in smaller mobile devices.”
