Samsung’s Q1 Ultra UMPCs Now Available with HSDPA and Vista Business

Samsung Electronics America announced today the availability of two new ultra mobile personal computers (UMPC). The Q1U-CMXP, a Q1 ultra mobile model with integrated HSDPA 3G cellular modem and the Q1UP-V, a Q1 Ultra Premium featuring Vista Business, join Samsung’s current line of UMPC’s. The new models are available nationwide at a suggested list price of $1,499 for the Q1U-CMXP and $1,449 for the Q1UP-V.

The Q1U-CMXP connects with integrated 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, 10/100 BaseTX, and an integrated HSDPA 3G cellular modem supporting the AT&T Broadband Connect network. In addition, the model boasts the same specifications as the industry standard Q1 Ultra XP model launched in May of 2007.

Ericsson expands Softbank Japan’s HSPA network

Ericsson has signed a frame agreement with Japanese operator, Softbank Mobile, to expand and upgrade its HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) network to increase capacity and enable even faster mobile broadband. With this contract, Ericsson will expand its business with Softbank by providing enhanced HSPA on new and existing base stations in the high traffic areas of Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.

The deal also includes an extension of the Ericsson circuit and packet switched networks, a field maintenance service and a full turnkey service for the rollout of new base stations.

207 HSDPA networks in 89 countries, says GSA

More than 200 HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) systems worldwide have launched commercial mobile broadband services, according to the latest research published today by GSA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association.

The GSA survey: “HSPA Operator Commitments” confirms 207 HSDPA networks have launched in 89 countries. This compares with 126 commercial HSDPA networks in 63 countries reported by GSA 12 months previously.

Virgin Mobile USA to Acquire Helio for Approximately $39 Million in Equity

Virgin Mobile USA, Inc. announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Helio, a joint venture between SK Telecom and EarthLink, Inc. providing highly advanced postpaid products and services with unique user applications. Under the terms of the agreement, Virgin Mobile USA will acquire Helio from SK Telecom and EarthLink for limited partnership units equivalent to 13 million shares of Virgin Mobile USA class A common stock, with a value of $39 million based on the closing price of Virgin Mobile USA’s class A shares on June 26, 2008.

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2008, subject to receiving regulatory approvals and satisfaction of other customary closing conditions.

Ericsson wins WCDMA/HSPA expansion contract with Sunrise in Switzerland

Ericsson has signed an agreement with the Swiss operator Sunrise Communications (Sunrise) to expand its WCDMA/HSPA network. The deal will bring high-speed mobile broadband coverage to Sunrise subscribers in a number of cities across Switzerland.

Under the three-year agreement, Ericsson will be the key supplier of radio access network equipment to expand the existing WCDMA/HSPA network of Sunrise. The expansion will increase network capacity and speed and allow Sunrise to extend its mobile broadband offering across the country.

Tele2 secures 2.6 GHz spectrum in Sweden

With the frequencies for 4G that Tele2 in Sweden now has been awarded, Tele2 will be able to build the next generation mobile network offering access speeds of more than 10 times faster than today’s network.

Telenor acquires license for 2.6 GHz spectrum in Sweden

The Swedish Post and Telecommunications Authority today concluded the auction of spectrum in the 2.6 GHz band, regarded as key to the next generation of mobile technology. Telenor Sweden was awarded a license for 2x 20 MHz in the auction, granting Telenor substantial opportunities to provide 4G services and high-quality mobile broadband.

“This is the most important spectrum auction since the 3G frequencies were distributed, and I’m very pleased that Telenor Sweden now holds this opportunity to build high-quality 4G networks and provide our customers with the many possibilities provided by next generation mobile services and Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. Telenor plans HSDPA expansion to cover 86 percent of Norway’s population

Telenor strengthens its mobile broadband offering in Norway through Mobilt Bredbånd. This year, the Turbo 3G network is being expanded to cover all communities with more than 200 inhabitants, equivalent to 86 per cent of the Norwegian population.

“This is a big step for rural Norway, and Turbo 3G from Telenor shall be experienced as having Norway’s best coverage, quality and capacity,” says Ragnar KÃ¥rhus, head of Telenor in Norway.

Ericsson deploys IMS solution and signs WCDMA/HSPA contract with Brasil Telecom

Ericsson has signed a contract with operator Brasil Telecom for a WCDMA/HSPA network and the deployment and systems integration of their IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The move is set to boost network capacity and manage increased traffic growth, paving the way for the introduction of advanced broadband and multimedia services.

Under the contract, Ericsson will be the main supplier for the WCDMA/HSPA radio access network in five Brazilian states and the sole supplier of Brasil Telecom’s 2G/3G common core network. As part of the core network, Ericsson’s Mobile Packet Backbone Network (Mobile-PBN) solution - from Ericsson’s Redback portfolio - will provide telecom-quality IP transport and allow the operator to introduce high-quality multimedia services quickly and reliably. Ericsson will also be responsible for network deployment, systems integration, training and support services.

Libya Telecom Technology Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Build Mobile WiMAX

Alcatel-Lucent announced that it has been awarded a contract by LTT (Libya Telecom and Technology), the national Internet Service Provider in Libya, to deploy the first commercial WiMAX network based on the 802.16e-2005 WiMAX standard, in Libya. LTT plans to launch the commercial service on the network in September 2008.

The new network will support voice over IP (VoIP) and high-speed internet access, enabling the delivery of advanced broadband multimedia services, such as video streaming, through a variety of end-user including modems and WiMAX terminals. It will also accommodate stationary, nomadic and mobile applications and complement the carrier’s existing fixed-based broadband services.

Motorola and Advanced Info Service Launch WiMAX Trials in Thailand

Motorola, Inc. is working with Advanced Info Service (AIS), the largest mobile operator in Thailand, to conduct trials of mobile WiMAX solutions. The trials will enable AIS to gain insight into the next generation personal wireless broadband services.

AIS started trials over Motorola’s WiMAX Access Point-400 (WAP-400) platform in Bangkok and Lamlukka in the first quarter of 2008. The operator is studying performance of real-life applications over the mobile WiMAX network, and customer usage models in metropolitan, suburban and rural areas.

Ericsson to supply WCDMA/HSPA network to TIM in Brazil

Ericsson has been selected by TIM Brasil, Brazil’s largest GSM operator, to provide a WCDMA/HSPA network, enabling the launch of high-speed mobile broadband in eight states across Brazil.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will be the sole supplier of a 2G/3G common core network and the main supplier of a radio access network in the Brazilian states of Acre, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia, São Paulo and Tocantins. The upgrade of TIM’s existing 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) network with the latest HSPA functionality will enable a smooth and efficient introduction of high-speed 3G (WCDMA/HSPA) services. Ericsson will also provide services, including network and technology consulting, network design, network deployment and systems integration of end user service platforms and applications.
