Parade of WiMAX laptops for U.S. begins

Acer, ASUSTeK, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba announce notebook computer plans for mobile broadband.

Five computer manufacturers announced the initial round of WiMAX-ready laptop computers. Through the addition of an expansion card designed by Intel, the machines are able to connect to the mobile WiMAX (802.16e-2005) services launched in the U.S. by mobile carrier Sprint. Acer, ASUSTeK, Lenovo and Toshiba timed their announcements with Sprint Nextel’s XOHM wireless network launch in Baltimore, Maryland. Dell announced its first lineup in August.

Texas-based Dell launched the Latitude “E” series laptops in August and claims they are WiMAX-enabled. Specific upgrade plans and purchase of the WiMAX module have yet to be announced.

Toshiba has unveiled it Satellite U405-ST550W laptop with support for mobile WiMAX. The computer includes 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a 13.3-inch screen.

 

Expect laptop models to become available over the balance of 2008 and additional models to be added as the Intel Wi-Fi / WiMAX module enters volume production.
